The Skwirk / Beechwood Homes Racing Team has won the first round of the 2015 Pirelli GT Championship at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide on the weekend.
Nathan Antunes’ Audi R8 LMS Ultra was clearly one of the fastest cars around the street circuit. Nathan won the first two races and finished third in the third race to take the round win.
Nathan started the first race from 4th position but quickly moved through the field to take the lead. He held on to take the chequered flag and his first Championship class victory. Later on Saturday afternoon, Antunes started the second race from pole and would have led from coast to coast in the 1 hour race except for receiving a controversial stop and go penalty. That setback was not enough to stop Antunes, who quickly re-took the lead and took his second chequered flag for the day.
Race 3 was held on Sunday morning and Nathan started from pole position. Unfortunately, there was a huge pile up shortly after the first bend and 7 cars were involved in a huge accident with the clean up bill expected to be in the millions. Fortunately Antunes missed the carnage, but due to the pit stop rules of the race (that disadvantage the more experienced drivers and those finishing higher on the grid), when the race resumed with less than 10 minutes to go, Nathan was back in 16th position. Antunes proceeded to fly through the field and moved up to third by the time the chequered flag was raised. Whilst the Darrell Lea entry got the chocolates in Race 3, Nathan’s drive could only be described as scintillating.
Congratulations to Nathan, the Melbourne Performance Centre and all the crew for having the Audi in such great shape.
The next round takes place at Phillip Island, Victoria on 22-23 May.
